As in everything of life that we wish to undertake, starting a relationship with the Qur’an as a beginner is not a simple thing, sometimes, at least, it requires significant changes in our way of life for the Koran to become our companion. You are certainly looking for tips for beginners with the Quran.
A fortiori, for the Qur’an to have a place in our lives, it will be first to do it by reviewing our activities, our time management, sometimes even our relationships. At first, one may be lost and not know how to go about making the Qur’an an integral part of our lives so that Allah (SWT) counts us among the people of the Qur’an in sha Allah. So that’s where the challenge starts.
I often compare the relationship we have to maintain with the Quran to a love relationship because nothing on earth deserves our love more than the Koran. Moreover, like any love relationship, it will be first to listen to our needs to answer and build a peaceful and lasting relationship. The problem is that when we fall in love, we tend to give everything from the beginning by forgetting ourselves, and in the end …the hard part is not the fall but the landing. In short, you will have understood; the departure is of the most determining because it determines your route, its duration, its trajectory but especially your endurance.
Because the most important thing is not to find the right path, it is to stay there. Moreover, to succeed to continue our road while the difficulties are the most important, inevitably, when one starts, is not a small matter.
However, it’s like everything else; the hard part is the beginning.
To take another comparison, it is identical in the field of sport. When you start jogging, the hardest minutes are the first 30, after you can fly to other horizons and nothing can stop you. It’s the same with the Qur’an. Because with the Koran, when your galley, you are rewarded.
So here are 11 tips for beginners in the Quran:

In addition to the free Arabic courses, we offer you to begin your journey to fluency in Arabic right now for free with a graduated Egyptian teacher.
1. Get rid of phonics and learn to read Arabic
As I explained in this article, many people go through phonetic transcription. When they learn Arabic, what happened? they have to relearn all the suras learned in phonetics because they all contained, without exception, pronunciation errors. The use of phonetic transcription should not be an end for a new itinerant of the Quran. It must only be a substitute until Allah (SWT) gratifies us by teaching the Arabic language. As I often say: The Quran has been revealed in Arabic, not in phonetics. Moreover, you will notice it yourself, to read in Arabic the Quran; it is something else.
2. After learning to read Arabic, you will have to improve your pronunciation of the letters
Ideally, you have to take tajwid classes. However, sometimes you can get overwhelmed with theory in some classes, and as a beginner, it can be discouraging. Whatever it is not the case for everyone as we can see with al-dirassa center. Nevertheless, there is a method that can serve as an intermediary before embarking on the theory. This is the Nouranya method, which allows exercises of decompositions of words to become familiar with the Arabic language and the Koran reading. It is an effective methodology for beginners. It can also be used by those who can not read Arabic to learn in sha Allah by practicing this method.
3. Listen to the Quran
It is also one of the best tips for beginners with Quran studies. Thus, if we follow at the same time, the recitation in the mushaf. Indeed, listening to the Qur’an will push us to repeat the sounds we hear, moreover. From listening, we will eventually improve in sha Allah while comparing our recitation with what we hear.
4. Study the Koran
Through the Qur’an, we seek to draw closer to Allah (SWT), and let us not forget that listening, reciting, and memorizing are only biases.
The purpose of the Qur’an is its implementation. Moreover, we will put it into effect only when we study it and meditate it in Sha Allah. It can merely begin with a good English translation of the Quran, but also through the Tafseer.
5. Arm yourself with patience
It is one of the best tips for beginners with Quran studies. Thus, if we follow at the same time, the recitation in the mushafWe said it in the introduction. The beginning is the hardest; thus, be patient because we have all been there without exception. Now you have to do your itinerary with the Qur’an in Sha Allah. There is so much to learn, and rushing is useless. Everything in its time, it is futile to put the cart before the horse. You will inevitably go through difficult moments, where you will say:
Maybe it’s not for me? It’s too hard. I can not do it!
It’s too late for me the train is over!
So my question for you is this: Are you ready to fight for your dreams? Alternatively, do you prefer to live in constant regret?
6. Work hard
Already because the one who lives difficulties to recite the Koran has a double reward, however, mainly because we are not going to lie to each other, in this life, but also in the hereafter, we never have anything without anything, so are you ready to fight against yourself for the sake of Allah?
7.Read at least one page a day
This is a piece of advice that I give to both beginners who want to get acquainted with Arabic reading and those who wish to develop a close relationship with the Qur’an in the long term. To those who want to do both (to smooth their reading and to make the Koran their companion), that’s what I advise you to do. :
Every time you read your daily page, you time yourself. In the beginning, you will take perhaps 10 to 15 minutes to read your page, then very quickly, you will be under 5 minutes. I recommend one page, but if you can do two pages a day, it’s better. Thus, you will be able to read the Quran in full in 1 year in sha Allah. You can start with one page a day and when you feel it becomes more comfortable for you, go to two, then three, and so on.
8. Have a Quran memorization program
Some will tell me that it can be foolhardy to memorize the Quran while we are only beginners. Well, do not you think so? Because getting familiar with a new alphabet, new letters, and new words is not simply memorizing their structures in our minds?
So to all those who wish to streamline their reading of the Qur’an, learn it, have a memorizing program. It is certainly one of the best tips for beginners with Quran studies. Those who are the fastest (it is not a question of racing) in the fluidity of their reading of the Quran are those who memorize it.
What is the ruling regarding the one who memorizes a portion of the Qur’an then forgets it?
Regarding this matter, the Permanent Council of Scholarly Research in Saudi Arabia said: It is not appropriate for the one who memorized the Qur’an to be derelict in reciting and maintaining it; instead, he should revise a set amount daily, to help him maintain the Qur’an and to prevent him from forgetting it;
Furthermore, he should do so, hoping for reward and seeking to benefit from its commands and rulings, both in belief and action. But if one memorizes a portion of the Qur’an then forgets it because he is careless or because he became busy, he is not sinning. All ahaadeeth that mention the punishment of any kind for the one who memorizes the Qur’an then forget are not authentically related from the Prophet PBUH for example, the report that Anas ibn Maalik said that the Messenger of Allāh PBUH said:
Imaam Ibn Al-Munaadi said in Mutashaabih Al-Qur’an (p. 52): “The Salaf were always afraid of forgetting a portion from the Qur’an after they had memorized it because this was a shortcoming.”
As-Suyooti said in Al-Itqaan (1/106): “Forgetting it is a major sin, as was stated by An-Nawawi in Al-Rawdah and others, because of the hadeeth “I was shown the sins of my ummah…”.”
In conclusion, it can be said that for the one who strives to review and revise the Qur’an regularly, there is no sin upon them when they do forget a portion of the Qur’an. However, censure is on those who neglect it and fail to review it and read it regularly.
9. Get help and get corrected
So here I open a long parenthesis. There are two types of people who will never learn: the proud and the timid. The shy because he does not dare to ask, and the proud because he thinks he knows everything, or he refuses to be corrected because it would hurt his ego.
When one understands the value and priority of things in the Islamic sciences in general, and particularly in the recitation of the Quran, one ends up somewhat liking the “slaps” that one can take because these we improve and bring us all the closer to Allah (SWT) and the prophetic model.
So we must not hesitate to ask for help and reach out to ask for explanations or see if we pronounce well. On top of that, the person you are asking for help should thank you because you also allow him to serve Allah (SWT) and perform a worship act. Sometimes you have to go to someone you know for your skills and say, Can I read about you?
10.Take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself to you
One of the best tips for beginners with the Quran studies is that we must indeed do the causes and organize ourselves in this way, but sometimes Allah (SWT) sends you certain things without knowing where it comes from. It is up to you to seize the opportunity.
11. Register for courses
The best is to follow Quran classes. Indeed it allows implementing most of the advice as mentioned above while being supervised by someone competent. The best thing to do is to attend regular classes. You are in an atmosphere of the Koran, you are monitored by someone qualified, and you have as a companion, other people who have for a companion the Koran. Nevertheless, al-dirassa center, as an online institute, provides online Quran courses.
The Al-dirassa Center offers online Arabic, Quran and Islam courses for non-Arabic speakers. If you would like to join our course, please contact us.
