Introduction to the noun of the instrument
The noun of the instrument – اِسْمُ الآلَةِ describes the instrument with which the action of the verb is carried out.
- It begins with the letter م as the noun of place and time, but the م bears kasrah -ِ instead of -َ.
- These nouns are on the pattern of one of the following:
مِفْتَاحٌ – فَتَحَ
To open – keys
مِصْبَاحٌ – صَبِحَ
Morning – lamp
مِيْزَانٌ – وَزَنَ
To weigh – balance
The plural of مِفْعَلَةٌ, مَفْعَالٌ and مِفْعَلٌ are on the pattern of مَفَاعِيلٌ and مَفَاعِلُ.

Examples of nouns of the instrument used in the Holy Quran
مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ
The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp (24:35)
وَعِندَهُ مَفَاتِحُ الْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا هُوَ
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him (6:59)
وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ
And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance. (55:9)
أَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds], (101:6)
