the doubled meem and noon letters - tajweed rules

The double “noon” and “meem” – النون و المِيم المُشَدَّتَيْنِ are all the letters noon and all meem doubled (carrying a shadda). In general, a doubled letter is originally composed of two letters:

  • the first surmounted by a sukoon
  • the second by a short vowel

The first letter was assimilated to the second to form a single split letter.

Technically, it is obligatory to pronounce them by making a 2-beat ghunna and by reinforcing the letter.

  • The doubled meem – مّ is originally composed of two meem, the first surmounted by a sukoon and the second by a short vowel. The first has been assimilated to the second to form a single redoubled letter.

Rule to apply to the doubled meem: It is necessary to make nasalization with a duration of 2 beats.

The doubled meem مّ is also called the “redoubled nasalized letter”.

The redoubled noon نّ is originally composed of two noon, the first surmounted by a sukoon and the second by a short vowel. The first has been assimilated to the second to form a single redoubled letter.

Rule to apply to redoubled noon: It is necessary to make nasalization for a duration of 2 beats.

The doubled noon – نّ is also called: “redoubled nasalized letter”.
